abstract = {The use of Augmented Reality (AR) in teaching and learning contexts for language is still young. The ideas are endless, the concrete educational offers available emerge only gradually. Educational opportunities that were unthinkable a few years ago are now feasible. We present a concrete realization: an executable application for mobile devices with which users can explore their environment interactively in different languages. The software recognizes up to 1000 objects in the user’s environment using a deep learning method based on Convolutional Neural Networks and names this objects accordingly. Using Augmented Reality the objects are superimposed with 3D information in different languages. By switching the languages, the user is able to interactively discover his surrounding everyday items in all languages. The application is available as Open Source.},

abstract = {The shift towards digital teaching is leading to an increased need for interactive teaching methods. Game-Based Learning combines teaching content with a motivating application. The learning simulation Finanzmars uses elements from Game-Based Learning to prepare the contents of a classical lecture in the field of economics for a learning game. The simulation is aimed at students of business administration or similar courses of study. The contents can be edited and extended directly by the teaching staff using an external configuration tool. The knowledge transfer is flanked by Micro Learning, systematic introductions to increasingly complex subjects, interaction with game elements and increased motivation through in-game successes such as a premium currency. The player finds himself in an economic simulation with the goal of exploiting the resources of Mars in a profitable and optimized way. In the game, construction, upgrading and repair of buildings, the development of future technology through research, the export of resources and expansion to other celestial bodies are available. The functionalities are based on possible courses of action in the real world, whose mechanisms play a central role in the lecture on the topic of finance. By means of logging and the evaluation of in-game objectives, the teachers can track the progress of the students. Our evaluation of 12 Master's students in Business Administration shows that there is an increase in economic expertise. Furthermore, the evaluation of the associated standardized AttrakDiff questionnaire according to DIN EN ISO 9241-11 certifies that the application is action-oriented and user-friendly. The description of the environment with regard to the course of studies and the teaching concept was largely done in the publication “Finanzmars im Kosmos von Blended Learning” by Marc Ritter, Christian Roschke and Volker Tolkmitt, who received the Best Paper Award in Teaching at the CARF Lucerne Conference in 2019. This publication focuses on the systematic elaboration of game design and implementation with a view to increasing learning success.},

abstract = {We present consecutive joint work that that was developed during a variety of modules in the master's degree Media Informatics and Interactive Entertainment at the University of Applied Sciences Mittweida. This project pursues the goal of implementing the history of the university via storytelling in an interactively playable and enjoyable learning simulation from the very beginning of its foundation in the middle of the 19th century to the present. The knowledge content to be conveyed is based on didactically motivated building blocks which the player consumes in connected game-based learning scenarios. Thus, a strong correlation between the learning content and virtual elements (tasks, 2D & 3D assets) is created. The starting point is a top-down perspective of the historical city of Mittweida. The underlying game environment and the 3D building models virtually represent the entire and alternating campus environment through the ages. Selected buildings can also be entered in a first-person perspective. By focusing on appealing aspects, the immersion and the accompanying fun factor and the willingness to absorb knowledge in an intrinsically motivated way is increased. This is visually supported by a mixture of comic-like and real scenarios which appear as an interactive function to the game design. In addition, graphical feedback elements have been integrated to send visual feedback to the player. This is based on the approach of gamification by the means of unique rewards to motivate players. The whole game was implemented by using the game engine Unity and a couple of tools from the domain of modelling like Autodesk Maya and Blender, animations from Autodesk 3ds Max and Adobe Premiere, as well as image processing and digital painting programs like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.},
